Family homes are the heart of traditional family gatherings, but as the needs of younger generations evolve, functionality can become an issue. ThirstyArchitects was tasked with creating a modern entertainment space that maintained the structural integrity of the original family home and avoided any modifications to the existing roof.

thought process

To the south of the home was an extensive, well-maintained garden which inspired us to create a space that could be protected from the elements while fully integrating into the natural surroundings. Two bedrooms and a washroom had windows on the southernmost wall, so enabling cross ventilation and the penetration of natural light was a key design consideration.

We created a 1.5-meter offset from the existing wall. Above the offset, we included an operable skylight that allows diffused sunlight to reach the existing bedrooms and washroom and can also open for additional ventilation. With greenery filling the offset, a privacy barrier exists between the interior rooms and the outdoor entertainment area, while the garden is also allowed to intertwine back into the space. A corridor on the exterior of the original eastern wall running from the original entrance to the space provides access from within the home.

Without the ability to alter the existing roof, the height of the pavilion would have been uncomfortably low, so we decided we would need to dig down 0.45 meters to create a sunken pavilion. The effect would be high ceilings and an infinity pool-like perspective into the garden for guests using the space. Stones and natural materials in the interior design ensure guests feel at one with the natural surroundings.

The sunken pavilion comfortably seats at least 20 people. However, interior and exterior spaces seamlessly integrate when the bifold doors encompassing the entire room are open. The design's simplicity allows for optimal flexibility, so both dining and lounge spaces are possible. A kitchenette and wet bar further enhance the overall functionality.
