kade house
Located in Kade in the Eastern Region of Ghana, with the plot being only 50x100 feet and the client ask being for a 6-bedroom house with a pool, the ThirstyArchitects team had to prioritize land optimization and functionality.
Before entering the home, the pool with a deck large enough for entertaining is the first thing that catches the eye. From the first glance, it is evident this home was designed for the occupants' comfort and enjoyment.
Upon entering the home, is an oversized shoe closet that can be used by occupants and guests alike to avoid cluttering the entrance. From the entry, guests walk into the open concept living room, dining area, and kitchen that ensures a constant sense of community that maintains the spirit of a traditional Ghanaian family home. There are also three bedrooms as well as a full bath on this main level.
As one approaches the stairs to ascend to the second level, it is apparent the architects intentionally left spaces between each step so that natural light may even penetrate this space and ensure no area falls into the shadows. At the top of the stairs is another living room and a full bath. The second-floor living room features floor to ceiling windows that overlook the pool.
Although this floor has three bedrooms, the grand master bedroom and master bedroom are significant upgrades compared to the other four bedrooms. These two rooms maximize natural light, and with south-facing views, optimize ventilation. The grand master bedroom has a balcony that overlooks the main entrance.
Equipped with an en suite that features a skylight over the shower, and a large walk-in closet that matches the size of the en suite, it is a space fitting the head of the family. The master bedroom is slightly smaller rendition of the grand master bedroom. It has a south-facing balcony and an en suite.
The final design was orientated to ensure cross ventilation throughout all bedrooms and shared spaces. No land was wasted, yet it does not appear crowded, and every aspect of the home was intentional.
